This is what a crisis is. When things happen that don’t make sense, and you don’t know what the cause of your confusion is and all the normal procedures don’t work in response to it. Like Hilary Clinton, you’re constantly surprised by events.
Surprise, however, is all in the mind.

A political crisis occurs when the governing assumptions (which are often implicit and unstated) can no longer account for – in intellectual terms – a series of anomalies, and – in practical terms – predict and control actors and events.

I AM THE REVOLUTION.

Why should a change of paradigm be called a revolution? In the face of the vast and essential differences between political and scientific development, what parallelism can justify the metaphor that finds revolutions in both? One aspect of the parallelism must already be apparent. Political revolutions are inaugurated by a growing sense, often restricted to a segment of the political community, that existing institutions have ceased adequately to meet the problems posed by an environment that they have in part created. In much the same way, scientific revolutions are inaugurated by a growing sense, again often restricted to a narrow subdivision of the scientific community, that an existing paradigm has ceased to function adequately in the exploration of an aspect of nature to which that paradigm itself had previously led the way. In both political and scientific development the sense of malfunction that can lead to crisis is prerequisite to revolution.

This genetic aspect of the parallel between political and scientific development should no longer be open to doubt. The parallel has, however, a second and more profound aspect upon which the significance of the first depends. Political revolutions aim to change political institutions in ways that those institutions themselves prohibit. Their success therefore necessitates the partial relinquishment of one set of institutions in favor of another, and in the interim, society is not fully governed by institutions at all. Initially it is crisis alone that attenuates the role of political institutions as we have already seen it attenuate the role of paradigms. In increasing numbers individuals become increasingly estranged from political life and behave more and more eccentrically within it. Then, as the crisis deepens, many of these individuals commit themselves to some concrete proposal for the reconstruction of society in a new institutional framework. At that point the society is divided into competing camps or parties, one seeking to defend the old institutional constellation, the others seeking to institute some new one. And, once that polarization has occurred, political recourse fails. Because they differ about the institutional matrix within which political change is to be achieved and evaluated, because they acknowledge no supra-institutional framework for the adjudication of revolutionary difference, the parties to a revolutionary conflict must finally resort to the techniques of mass persuasion, often including force.

The Crisis of the Imperial Paradigm.
In America, the third element of the crisis –after the economic and security aspects –was in clear view. In the United States, it was evident as nowhere else that the disparate economic and security crises of the world were intertwined. And the thing that held them together was something called the Narrative.
The Narrative was the third and political element, the binder that combined economics and security into legitimacy.

But because the economic and security subsystems were being neglected the Narrative was increasingly all that was keeping things going. It was as if a three legged stool were on the verge of collapse, but that its condition was being concealed by tilting it so that it was precariously balanced on one leg.
The three legs of the stool were no longer fulfilling their design function, which was to express the underlying and actual physical arrangements in an abstract way. The names were still being used for supports which had since given way. This was dangerous because the real task of any functioning information system is to represent reality so events in the ‘real world’ can be simulated and managed conveniently.
The financial system for example simulates value; the international security order represents peace; and the political system stands for a mandate. While these are sync all is well. Information problems occur when the virtual and the real parts of the universe no longer correspond as when instruments no longer read correctly. In that case the readout of the instruments is a fiction and it ceases to be a valid information.

The crisis in America was that for reasons of convenience, the political class had tried to fix the mounting problems by rigging the readouts rather than using it to repair breakdowns.
The result was a sham where the spin was increasingly substituted for facts to make up the ‘Narrative’. In the media capitals of the West, the emphasis is increasingly on spin, rather than exposition; on the techniques of deceit rather than discovery. An entire industry had been created to coin euphemisms, invent cover stories and concoct mazes to obfuscate obfuscate the facts, not to solve problems, but to cover them up.

This created a debasement in the Narrative –akin to wildly inflating money –which gradually threatened to undermine rather than enhance legitimacy. As long as the deceit went undetected thing went on. But the danger the bubble would burst was ever-present.
The problem was that years of unquestioned credibility made it too easy to lie and the political elites succumbed to the temptation. The ease with which assurances were accepted, the facility with which information could be manipulated eventually perverted the American political system.
Over the decades, the awareness of the short-term interchangeability of information and fact had grown so strong it intoxicated the political class and seduced them into using it to ‘fix’ knotty problems. The very success of post-war America provided cover for the deceivers. Even when things were no longer working well, they found that as long as the illusion of normalcy could be maintained problems could be hidden. They abused the Narrative to postpone the effects of misgovernance, or hide malfeasance –proverbially “kicking the can down the road” –until well clear of office or accountability.
This has led to a political regime based on information corruption.

1: Paradigm Shifts and Persuasion Strategy.
All restorations are revolutions but not all revolutions are restorations.
A revolution is when one caste (Priest, Merchant or Soldier) violently overthrows another.
What then is a restoration?
What is the structure of political restorations?
If a restoration occurs, then it must exhibit a certain orderly, logical structure – in terms of coordinated thought and behavior.
Today, we will address the structure and nature of political paradigm shifts – in the intellectual sense.
In what follows, we will set out a basic template that you can use. Regular readers will be by now familiar with our use of Thomas Kuhn’s concept of paradigms, anomalies and the crisis; today, we apply Kuhn’s concepts more comprehensively.
The purpose of the following template is that it offers three useful things for reactionaries:
1: An explanatory framework of the crisis that sets the stage for a “paradigm shift” by both anticipating one and justifying it – if and when it occurs.
2: It offers a structure or framework from which one can use to persuade enemies to become neutrals and neutrals to become allies.
3: For those who adopt and develop a new paradigm the “promise”, as Kuhn notes, of “future rewards” is a critical feature to its success. For scientists, these rewards are the chance to solve “puzzles” within the paradigm. So, the following then will, again, provide a framework for “research projects”.
The Promise of Future Rewards.
To bring about a paradigm shift it is necessary to have a new political paradigm that can replace it. While this is obvious, it is often overlooked.
To succeed, you must be able to persuade the next generation of elites – whoever those elites might be.
It is young men that bring about paradigm shifts because it is they who can and will invest in them.
The young can take risks and invest in a novel paradigm because they do not yet have any deep or serious investment – of time, money and status – in the dominant paradigm.
The young invest in a new paradigm because they believe that by doing so, the paradigm offers the promise or prospect of future rewards – pay, prestige and power. (The other P will follow naturally and necessarily, of course.)
The following offers a template for how to think about presenting such a paradigm either to progressives or to anyone else.
2: Structure and Sequence.
Assume the following:
1: You’re trying to explain and persuade a committed progressive (or a conservative, libertarian etc), that what they are committed to – their paradigm – is in crisis.
2: Your interlocutor, who we will refer to as (P), is a member of the intelligentsia – or is at least “politically” literate. They pride themselves for their “evidence-based beliefs” etc. Their identity or self-image is that they are a “smart” person.
3: Your method is a combination of the Socratic Method (questioning) and simply pointing to certain, undeniable facts. Then, you advance, step-by-step towards your goals (at stated above).
Thus, the following can be considered structured talking points that you can make use of.
(In the appendix you can make use of some of our stores of sources in order to construct your own arguments.)
Sequence.
The following sequence develops over three main parts:
1: Opening moves.
2: The Development.
3: Endgame.
Opening Moves.
1: Your opening move is to ask if P has heard, read or is aware of Thomas Kuhn, a Harvard educated philosopher and historian of science; in particular, you want to know if they have heard or read anything from or about his book the Structure of Scientific Revolutions.
(The basic technique here is intellectual jiu jitsu. You are using their identity as a progressive intellectual against them. Harvard, meanwhile, is the Alpha University of the progressives and Kuhn is or was an “authority”. So you are using identity, authority and their commitment to the progressive paradigm against them. )
2: Next, you must “big up” Kuhn and his importance. You are providing a challenge and you have two ways to win and no way to lose.
Firstly, they understand the concepts and are willingly to engage or they do not but are happy for you to explain things to them. Secondly, whether they know or not, they are unwilling to participate, thus you paint them as dogmatic, close-minded and ignorant of a very smart Harvard man.
Tut tut.
3: Your next big move is to get them to commit to the proposition that everything (as far as we know) is impermanent. There is growth and decay; the rising and passing away of scientific theories and political ideologies, great nations and civilisations.
(All of this is simply to secure commitment and create a pattern of consistency.)
4: Get them to admit that it is possible for people to be systematically wrong about the nature of reality.
Firstly, begin with cults; then move on to religion and finally provide examples of failed political ideologies (Communism say).
Next, prime them about political and scientific revolutions. Ask them if they believe that both are possible, what they involve and why they happen
(All obvious questions. This is still the softening them up stage.)
5: Now for the final move of the opening section:
What, if any, similarities exist between a scientific and a political revolution?
(Spend some time exploring this last one – no rush).
The Development.
Part A: Anomalies.
In this stage of the sequence, you want to begin to lay out the grounds for claiming that this is an age of crisis by providing examples of anomalies. (See Appendix.)
Here is the principal example that should be good for the next 4-8 years:
1: Anomaly Zero: The Triumph of Trump.
It is pretty hard to deny, that not only is Trump an “anomaly”, he is a deeply unexpected and resented one.
The corollary of this is that Obama, despite all the fanfare, proved to be a failure: the great disappointment.
Obama failed according to the first principle of politics: gain and maintain power. He failed to secure his legacy (with Clinton) and under his watch, the Republicans took more seats in the House and Senate, along with securing more Governorships. For progressives and Democrats this is a big fail.
2: Your goal is to attempt to secure their agreement that Trump’s triumph is an anomaly; it was a surprise and ran counter to nearly everything the Cathedral intellectuals said. Trump’s victory is an anomaly in need of explanation. (See Appendix for sources.)
3: It is necessary to have some grasp of the concepts before pressing on; thus, here are two simple devices to help you remember the core elements in Kuhn’s paradigm of paradigms
A: Alliteration:
A problem that brings with it the promise of procedures that, if followed, will allow the practitioner the chance to attain paradigm perfection and a life of good pay, prestige and power and this is what persuades potential professionals to practice and perfect your potential paradigm.
B: Paradigm flowchart:
Pre-paradigms and conflict.
1: Problems.
2: Possibilities.
3: Persuasion.
4: Persuasion via the promise of pay, prestige, power and a life of puzzle-solving.
5: Professionals with procedures for puzzle-solving.
6: Paradigm. (Normal science and normal politics.)
7: Anomalies.
This is the logic and development of paradigm shifts. To finish, you should provide one or two prime examples of a paradigm as proof of concept.
4: Your goal is to get them committed to this paradigm of paradigms. The reason is that they will be committed to the possibility that there exists a crisis for the progressive paradigm.
Part B: The Progressive Paradigm of Power.
1: Your next task is to get P to articulate what they believe political form and reality to be – what they believe the answer to the who/whom question is.
2: The following are pre-set questions that you can use:
A: What type of government is USG?
(Democracy, oligarchy or monarchy?)
B: Who are the Ruling Elite?
(They will either choose “priests” or merchants; professors or capitalists.)
C: What are the memes and means of governing for the Ruling Elite?
What is the political formula?
Has it got something to do with progress, reason, justice, equality, peace and freedom?
How is the Ruling Elite selected and trained; via universities or via corporations or military academies?
How does the Ruling Elite implement its rule? Is it through force (simple military government) or is it through a voluntary contract like in business? Is it via a myth as with priests? )
3: The general idea here is to get P to think from scratch. To make the familiar and taken for granted seem strange and uncertain.
4: It may also help to keep in mind the elements which make up what the Grand Master calls the Modern Structure.
The Modern Structure is made up of four sub-structures:
A: The Cathedral: Universities and the Press or Policy and Propaganda.
B: The Polygon: Civil service, Banks, Judiciary, Military-Industrial Complex and the big corporates, the Political parties. The management structure or all those groups who have both influence and implement the policies.
C: The Castes: Brahmin; Vaisya; Dalit; Helot and Optimate.
D: Universalism. The belief structure which comprises of: 1: Peace. 2: Fraternity. 3: Social Justice. 4: Government as a charity administrated by “priests” – professors, technocrats, lawyers and judges.
5: Spend as much time as necessary setting up all the pieces.
If necessary, trace the proximate origins of the Modern Structure to 1933 and FDR’s New Deal and the military triumph in 1945 which made USG a global empire (Which we examine in the the next part).
6: What comes next is crucial: the three central pillars of USG’s paradigm of power:
The above are necessary conditions of any political paradigm and not just USG’s paradigm. You can get P to accept the above as necessary if you ask them to accept that in the absence of any one pillar, a state is no longer a state but a failed or vassal state.
6: Once the commitments of 5 are secured, then the next thing to do is to get P to stipulate the ends and the necessary conditions for success within each pillar. With this secured, you can then ask P to compare Form and Reality.
In short, USG’s paradigm is legitimate and healthy when
A: USG’s domestic and global security is secured or at least conflicts are dealt with effectively.
B: USG’s economic system is solving the basic problems of productivity, prosperity, employment, innovation etc. etc.
C: Persuading people that – yes! The Good Times really are Good.
6: Your next move is to set this test. Does theory and reality cohere?
If P can see the anomalies or problems for himself, all good; however, if not then you will have to introduce some examples.
7: Anomalies.
In order to accomplish the goal in 6, you need to point out anomalies. An anomaly is something that contradicts the paradigm and or cannot be explained by the paradigm.
Part C: The Four Anomalies.
There are four broad categories of anomalies. We have covered anomalies regarding security and economics previously and you can find many more examples in the Appendix.
1: The First Anomaly is the contradiction between political form (democracy) and political reality (oligarchy or technocracy); a democracy cannot be a technocracy. Thus, the government is de facto illegitimate.
2: The Second Anomaly is the contradiction between the paradigm of peace and progress on the one hand, and the reality of growing political instability, rising crime, personal insecurity and the fact of permanent warfare on the other.
3: The Third Anomaly is the contradiction between the promise of effective technocratic management of the economy – steady growth, full employment and prosperity – with the reality of repeated crashes, recessions, unemployment, rising debt and falling living standards.
4: The Fourth Anomaly was not only Trump’s defeat of the Cathedral but the exposure of the mainstream media as an unofficial branch of the government and the subsequent, ongoing, declining power and influence of the press and their propaganda.
To put it another way, the observation that the sources of information (the press) are corrupt and the providers are untrustworthy (propagandists not journalists) and that the content of the information or news is fake. (See the Appendix for many examples.)
4: Endgames.
4A: The Crisis.
1: Now, it is time to bring it all to a conclusion. This is where you introduce the concept of a crisis.
A crisis is when the paradigm cannot solve its basic and or unforeseen problems and it cannot explain its failure to solve them either.
This claim – that a crisis pertains to USG – can be made both from within the paradigm and from the standpoint of an outside paradigm.
You can try to get P to see the crisis from either within the progressive paradigm and or from within a different, external paradigm. Don’t expect to make them experience a gestalt switch right away; you want to be able to plant some seeds in the hope that some of them will flower if they get water, light and have a little luck on their side.
According to Kuhn, a sign that a paradigm is in crisis is when the professionals begin to question, re-think and debate the fundamental assumptions of the paradigm.
2: The following is what you need to make P pay attention to and what you need to point out to P:
A: If a scientific paradigm is in crisis, scientists spend less time solving puzzles and more time philosophizing about the puzzles themselves.
B: If a technocratic paradigm is in crisis, technocrats spend less time solving technical problems and more on what problems to actually solve. (In fact, the reality is that they will spend more time scheming to secure their power and punish their enemies.)
3: Provide a number of examples of just this sort of thing occurring; among political philosophers, journalists, pundits, politicians, strategists etc. etc to P. (See Appendix.)
4: A different way of defining a crisis is that a crisis is well and truly underway when normal science or normal politics is suspended because there is no fundamental consensus and thus no necessary cooperation.
Then, it is likely that soon two or more groups will wage all out memetic or physical war against each other.
At this point, you are simply following through the implications contained with the structure or logic of a crisis.
4B: The Paradigm Shift – Revolution.
1: Finally, a paradigm shift or a revolution occurs when one paradigm is exchanged for another.
In the words of Mao, a revolution is when one class violently overthrows another and a paradigm shift is when one group, with one paradigm, overthrows the dominant group defending their paradigm.
2: The question, naturally, is to ask if Trump represents just such a paradigm shift.
You can get P to seriously reflect upon this question, once they have carried out all the previous steps. Their response may well be quite revealing, because they may know more and are more sensitive to their own paradigm than you and can tell you things you might not know or understand as well as them.
(We will not analyse Trump as representing a paradigm shift here. See the Appendix.)
5: Summary and Conclusions.
The above template is both a structure for explaining and persuading. It sets up a “framework of frameworks” from which you can stand outside of the conventional frameworks of left and right.
Notice that no positive paradigm is offered here.
The first mission is always to persuade others that a crisis is real and that the current paradigm is inadequate.
That, of course, is not enough. To produce an actual paradigm shift, a different, persuasive paradigm must be presented. The new paradigm must promise to solve the problems the previous paradigm could not. Finally, the paradigm must be capable of providing pay, prestige and power for those who risk investing in it.
Finally, notice that the structure and sequence presented here cannot coherently be rejected.
One cannot think, except in terms of a paradigm – even if it is in terms of a paradigm of paradigms. To argue against any one of the moves set out above, one would require the use of a paradigm. Thus, while this does not make the contingent facts necessarily correct, it means this framework cannot be avoided.
Thus, this concludes our analysis of the crisis – a crisis of the state.
